Bleachers Released an All-Female Cover Album of Strange Desire and It Rules

Entertainment

Forget Ryan Adams’s 1989, an album whose pleasures should be apparent to only Ryan Adams fans and interesting to a smaller cohort still. In terms of gender-flipped cover collections, what Bleachers just did in Terrible Thrills Vol. 2 is much, much livelier: it’s their debut album Strange Desire with a different woman on the vocals of each track, with Sia, Tinashe, MØ, Brooke Candy + Jack Antonoff’s sister (?), NATALIE MAINES, Carly Rae and former Bleachers tourmate Charli XCX all coming out to play.

Charli’s track in particular, a slightly punker version of the melting, heart-warm, Springsteen-lite single “Rollercoaster,” is terrific:

(My favorite cover of that one will always be How to Dress Well’s ghostly slow-dance, though.)

Also very, very, very good is Tinashe’s version of “I Wanna Get Better,” which in its original form sounds a bit too much like a jingle but here sounds like something perfectly weightless out of Legally Blonde:

You can listen to the whole collection here, and even download it for free. Start at Sara Bareilles and keep going ‘til you hit the Dixie Chick!
