Brave Director Benny Boom Will Helm Troubled Tupac Biopic

After John Singleton walked away from the Tupac Shakur biopic in June, music director Benny Boom has stepped up to direct the long-delayed, possibly cursed film.

Boom, according to Rolling Stone, announced the news via Instagram.

The movie is on a quick turnaround schedule because Tupac’s movie music rights will return to his mother, Afeni Shakur, if production doesn’t start by December 31. The rapper, actor and poet’s biopic was originally scheduled to begin filming in June but Singleton quit after disagreeing with the production company, Morgan Creek. He was replaced by Out of Time and House of Cards director Carl Franklin, who left the project after just one month when Morgan Creek was served with a breach of contract lawsuit for $10 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Benny Boom has been directing music videos for over 15 years, and is responsible for such iconic clips as Nas’s “Oochie Wally,” Ciara’s “Goodies” and “1, 2 Step,” Birdman’s “What Happened to that Boy” and Nicki Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap,” among others. His previous full-length works include 2009’s Next Day Air and 2011’s S.W.A.T.: Firefight; if the Pac biopic pans out, it will be his third film.
