Ed Sheeran Giveth With 'Dirrty' Cover, Taketh Away With 'CoCo' Cover

Entertainment

Think back to the time when Christina Aguilera was having a no-fucks breakthrough and released her pop-hop single “Dirrty,” featuring Redman. She wore leather chaps in the music video. Ed Sheeran took the song for an acoustic spin during a session for BBC 1’s Live Lounge.

And guess what, it’s good. His version chills down Aguilera’s liberating and pointedly chaotic original without losing the flavor. He also does a decent job rapping Redman’s part.

Not as good: Sheeran took on O.T. Genasis’ “CoCo” and transformed it from an ignorant ode to coke to a sweet melodic ode to coke. It’s not one of his most effective covers, and it’s missing the exaggerated inflections of the original. But it didn’t immediately turn me off like it did some of my Jezebel coworkers. Anonymous: “it’s really bad I could only handle 3 seconds.”

Ed Sheeran giveth. Ed Sheeran taketh away.
