The latest in Miguel’s recurring series of a cappella covers is Pussy Riot’s recently released track, “Make America Great Again.” The jam is off their 2016 album xxx, and though I think we can all agree that Miguel’s version is more than just a “shitty emo cover,” he is right that you gotta check out the original song—and more specifically, the video. It’s vaguely reminiscent of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” with cartoonishly bright colors sharply contrasted against the cruel, institutional backdrop of prison.

One big difference, though, is that while “Telephone” has Beyoncé chewing a Honey Bun from the driver’s seat of the Pussy Wagon, Pussy Riot’s version features clips of America’s actual president, Donald Trump, spliced among shots of activist/singer Nadya Tolokonnikova getting seared with a glowing branding iron. What a great illustration of the difference between 2010 and 2017!
