Let Amy Poehler Inspire You With Her Cover of 'The Rose'

It’s no secret that Amy Poehler loves to sing, but the comedian really took her game up a notch over the weekend when she performed Bette Midler’s “The Rose” at Festival Supreme, giving the torch song her all in sunglasses, a coat straight from Janis Joplin’s closet, and a cigarette dangling from her fingers.

While Poehler also did a comedy set at this year’s festival, her surprise performance with Jack Black’s band on Saturday night is what she’s going to be remembered for by attendees. And while the cover is a clear delight for the audience (lighters up!), it may have also been a pivotal moment Poehler, who last year told Vulture that she and The Divine Miss M have been friends in her head since she was a kid:

“I first met Bette Midler in my head when I watched the film The Rose in 1979. And since then, her and I have been best friends, in my head. In my head, she and I travel together, we have cut an album, and we pranked George Clooney. She’s the godmother to the children of mine that she has never met, and once, Bette turned to me in a dream and said, ‘Amy, you are the most talented person I’ve ever met. I hate to say this, this kills me, but you’re more talented than me. God bless you and I release you to God,’ and then she turned into a million doves and flew away.”

The rendition in this video certainly won’t be be blazing up the charts anytime soon (so probably don’t expect an album from Poehler), but it’s a joy to watch—partly because Poehler is so clearly into it and partly because, for a cover of “The Rose,” this video is whimsical as fuck.
