Watch Florence + The Machine's Cinematic Video For 'What Kind Of Man'

Entertainment

Last night, Florence and the Machine announced How Big How Blue How Beautiful, her first full-length LP since 2011’s Ceremonials. Florence also released a video for her first single, “What Kind of Man.”

The video, directed by Vincent Haycock and choreographed by Ryan Heffington, is sheer drama—we have reflections on love and suffering, a car crash, a brief NSFW moment, a baptism, and more. The track itself builds slowly, with a pared-down version of the monastic anguish that bleeds through most of her work; the song then rears up into its full, thumping texture, “What kind of man loves like this?” the echoed refrain.

In a press release, Florence explains that the album—which was produced by Markus Dravs (whose wide-ranging credits include Björk, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Angel Haze, and Mumford & Sons)—constitutes a departure from her usual range of inspiration:

“The new album became about trying to learn how live, and how to love in the world rather than trying to escape from it. Which is frightening because I’m not hiding behind anything but it felt like something I had to do.”

How Big How Beautiful will drop on June 2, via Republic.
