It's Alright, I Don't Wanna Be Saved by the Bell

A lot can change in a few years. Feelings toward a potential reboot of a beloved early ’90s teen show, for one—and its dweeby co-star Screech could be arrested twice (once for stabbing a guy), serve his time and be placed on probation, for another. So is the story of Saved by the Bell. You might remember Tiffani Amber Thiessen, who played Kelly Kapowski on the hit program, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2016 that a revival would never, ever go down. But that might not matter because Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Zack Morris himself, isn’t counting it out. And since Screech is available now... there’s a possibility.

First, I am as sorry as you are that we have to keep talking about reboots. But in a new interview with Fox News, Gosselaar said he’s totally open to bringing Saved by the Bell back:

“I’d like to see a version that was worth everyone’s time. There’s a lot of versions that we see that don’t do it justice. But I’d like to see a version, yeah, I’d like to see a version that we’d all agree on.”

He continued, saying he has “no idea” what it would look like, and went on to compliment a Karate Kid reboot no one has seen:

“I do like what ‘Cobra Kai’ has done. I think that that’s a very interesting way of doing a reboot. I don’t know if whether or not we could do that with our show, but I’d be interested in something that was along the lines of that.”

After Googling Cobra Kai, I found it to be an ultra-depressing YouTube Red series about middle-aged karate kids trying to navigate life in and outside the dojo. Gosselaar thinks something like that could work for Saved by the Bell, but listening to Zack Morris has rarely worked out.

I’m not watching unless it includes biker chick Tori!!

How do you do “justice” to Saved By the Bell? Intentionally make it cheesy and bad against the current trend of making even middling teen shows somewhat witty and smart?

And Mark-Paul Gosselaar didn’t become a super star or anything but he certainly does OK. Why would he agree to this ever?

Also, Cobra Kai was great.

ETA: I want a Swans Crossing reboot! With Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role.
