A Sneak Peek at the TV Show Versailles and Its Would-Be Woman Doctor

Having thrown British media into a not-at-all overplayed for the Internet pearl-clutching tizzy, the costume drama Versailles is creeping towards America’s shores, set to air in the fall. And since it is, after all, Bastille Day, U.S. broadcaster Ovation has sent us over an exclusive clip.

The show follows Louis XIV as he climbs steadily toward his destiny as the autocratic Sun King with the great honking palace everybody remembers from history class. But it also tracks characters like Claudine, a doctor’s daughter and midwife who wants to pursue medicine, and a modern version of medicine at that, which brings her into conflict with her father—well, and much of the rest of her world, as you can see from the clip.

Very intriguing. Hope there’s still plenty of raunch, though. The show debuts in October; here’s the trailer, and you can find out more at Ovation’s website.

Ginger Is A Construct

Damn, my wishful thinking had me convinced this would be in French. I’m sure the palace intrigue and gorgeous sets will help me block out the British accents, but barely.

Also, I really, really, really, really hope this covers the affair of poisons! (it should, given the time period.)
