Actually, Bryce Dallas Howard's Character in Jurassic World Loves Running in Heels

If by some miracle, you don’t recall the footwear drama around Jurassic World—the continuation of the Jurassic Park series starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard—allow me to refresh to your memory: Howard made headlines in 2015 when viewers from around the country poured into movie theaters to watch some wholesome, dinosaur-chasing entertainment, and were met face to face with Howard’s character, Claire, who wore heels all the time. Heels in the jungle. To run away from towering prehistoric menaces! It made no sense!!!

And many said so at the time. So many, apparently, that the creators of Jurassic World 2 wrote scenes in which Claire is not wearing heels. That’s according to Howard, who told the Radio Times in an interview last week that she fought to put heels back in to some of those scenes (!!!):

“It’s a part of the character and kind of a metaphor for her journey. And that’s how it was intended in the first [Jurassic World movie] and intended in the second.”

A metaphor? Oh no, certainly there could be an easier way to showcase Claire’s strength in overcoming obstacles and telegraph that she’s a boss-ass bitch! Howard added:

“You know, it’s funny, obviously Claire is prepared this time going to the island, so she’s naturally going to wear boots. But in the first scene, like you mentioned, I’m wearing high-heels, and it was written as like, ‘Claire’s wearing sneakers.’ Like specifically, ‘Claire’s wearing speakers.’ And I just circled that when I was reading it and I was like, ‘No… no it’s an office, Claire would wear heels.’ And then it was like another scene where I’m like, ‘Hmm, well, Claire’s kind of like… she’s going to wear heels in this scene also.’”

I like Bryce Dallas Howard, and I admire Claire’s dedication to maintaining decorum in her office—despite the many physical challenges that her line of work presents outside those four walls. But I hope homegirl at least keeps an extra pair of flats under her desk. And maybe some comfy insoles.
