Black Mirror Is Back to Ruin Your New Year

It’s a dreary period after the holidays when everyone must trudge back to work and figure out how to sell their crappy gifts on eBay. But, at least, there is some hope in the New Year. Will you finally take advantage of that gym membership?Dip your toe into online dating? Or will you realize that you’re actually just one step closer to living in Black Mirror’s dystopian nightmare?

Black Mirror typically drops right after Christmas, before the New Year, smartly reminding you that the future is bad. And according to a new trailer, tomorrow the anthology series is dropping what Netflix is calling Black Mirror’s first ever feature film, Bandersnatch. The official synopsis is:

In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge. Welcome back.

Well, isn’t that fun? When the episode title was accidentally leaked earlier this month, people immediately connected the episode to an actual 1984 video game of the same name that never got released.

A few months ago it was also reported that Black Mirror was experimenting with a “choose your own adventure” style episode, and given that Bandersnatch is about video games this might be the one. Because what’s the point of making a movie about a man losing his mind playing a video game if you can’t make every viewer also lose their mind in the process?
