Ameer Vann, a member of the Viceland-supported boy band BROCKHAMPTON, has been booted from the group, after several women came forward on Twitter to accuse him of sexual misconduct.
On May 12, Rhett Rowan, a singer-songwriter who claimed to have dated Vann, described his behavior as “emotional[ly] manipulative and mentally abusive.” She also accused him of sexual misconduct with a minor prior to the start of their relationship in 2015. Vann responded that day, in a series of now-deleted Tweets: “I’ve been in relationships where I’ve fucked up and disrespected my partners. I’ve cheated and been dismissive to my exes,” he wrote. “In response to the claims of emotional and sexual abuse: Although my behavior has been selfish, childish, and unkind, I have never criminally harmed anyone or disrespected their boundaries. I have never had relations with a minor or violated anybody’s consent.”
The rest of BROCKHAMPTON has taken note. On May 27, they published a statement on their Twitter page revealing that Vann has been removed from the band, and that they have cancelled their upcoming US tour dates to “go home and regroup.”
Three days prior to the announcement, band leader Kevin Abstract responded to the accusations in an Instagram Live session, offering fans a purposefully vague comment: “I don’t agree with anything Ameer has admitted to, and I’ve talked with him about that. He’s been getting help for, like, over the past year...I shoulda said something. I shouldn’t have been quiet for so long.”
Representatives for BROCKHAMPTON declined to comment.
