Cardi B Drops 'Money' Early, Says Nicki Minaj Fans Made Her Do It

On her latest single “Money,” Cardi B maintains a strategy that’s never failed her: being super blunt. Even before the beat drops, you know this track will be a fun one. Right out the gate, Cardi raps over staccato piano chords, and manages to be both stone-cold and approachable. “I got a baby, I need some money, yeah/I need cheese for my egg,” she reasons—a reminder that motherhood is expensive even when you’re a celebrity.

As Cardi explained on Instagram Live, she released the song earlier than expected (it was scheduled to drop on Thursday) after someone leaked it. Cardi chalks this up to Nicki Minaj’s fans being obsessed with her in a way that feels contradictory to their aims. “We tried to retract it, but you know the Barbz,” Cardi said on Instagram. “They always posting me. They always post everything I do. You know what I’m saying? They claim they hate me, but they really love me, because they be on my page before my fans.”

It’s unclear if a Minaj fan really was behind the song’s premature release, but Cardi’s response strikes me as a level-headed way of dealing with the leak. Plus, the song is a banger.
