Celine Dion Is Ending Her Reign As Las Vegas Residency Queen

It’s another end of another era: Celine Dion has announced that her current residency at the Caesars Palace Colosseum venue in Las Vegas will come to a close on June 8, 2019.

“I definitely have mixed emotions about this final run,” said Dion in a statement posted on her Facebook page. “Las Vegas has become my home and performing at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace has been a big part of my life for the past two decades. It’s been an amazing experience and I’m so grateful to all the fans who have come to see us throughout the years. Every show we do at the Colosseum throughout this fall, and right up until the final one, will feel very special.”

To be fair, Dion is so emotionally tuned in that I’m sure every breath she takes throughout this fall and beyond, and right up until the final one, will feel very special.

The residency, simply titled Celine, has reportedly grossed over $233 million since opening in 2011. The one that preceded it at Caesars (A New Day…) ran from 2003 to 2007 and reportedly grossed $385 million. That one is often credited for helping revive Las Vegas as a concert destination and rehabbing the town’s musical reputation as a graveyard for the careers of once-hot pop stars. Celine de-stigmatized Vegas for fellow performers. That’s one of her several superhuman feats.

I felt like I went through so much with her through this show, and I never attended a single date! The magic of YouTube brought us her emotional return to the stage after the 2016 death of her husband René Angélil:

There was the time she dedicated her show to the families of the victims of the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas:

There was the time she handled a drunk, troubled fan with complete grace and respect:

Not to mention all the chest-pounding, throat-contorting, brow-furrowing, body-bending emotion she thrusts into those same songs every damn night she takes that stage and gives the all of someone who works on tips whose rent was due two days ago.

Granted, there’s only indication so far that this residency is ending—Dion could, in the future, begin a new one as she did after A New Day… ended. Which is to say that after June of next year, Dion’s time in Vegas may… go on. (Sorry, but I couldn’t not.)
