Childish Gambino Is Blatantly Angling for That Song of the Summer

Entertainment

We’re not a full month into summer yet, which means there’s still beaucoup time to anoint the Song of the Summer, a title only music industry people seem to care about. To perhaps challenge Drake’s “Nice for What” (the current No. 1 song in the country) and Cardi B’s “I Like It,” Childish Gambino / Donald Glover has a pair of summer songs up his sleeves. (Metaphorically, because it’s too hot for sleeves in the summer.) (Unless they’re linen.)

Both singles, released as part of a two-song Summer Pack, shamelessly have “summer” in the title to guide us along. “Summertime Magic,” the first single from his next album, is a low-pressure jam you’ll listen to near a warm body of water or mosquito-ridden rooftop, eyes closed with a vape in hand. Everyone’s laughing and jubilant as you sing along: “It’s ya summertiiime magiiiiic/that makes me wanna dance all night long,” with the necessary emotional detachment.

That’s the day party and the night party is “Feels Like Summer,” a more abstract, trance-inducing track that features a line I tell myself all the time while on my second shower of the day: “Every day gets hotter than the one before.” Two simple, irreverent summer songs effectively programmed for the season—listen below.
