Sassenachs, I have a confession.

Unfortunately, your faithful and loyal recapper had to choose between a long-planned family trip and the season finale of Outlander. (Well, I tried to stream it, but I ran into technical difficulties too tedious to bore you with.) Even the charming Jamie Fraser can’t compete with vacation, though he did follow me across the Atlantic:

However! This post is for anybody who wants to talk over the finale. Did it work for you? Did they successfully balance the bleak with the romance?

See you all next season—IN PARIS.

DISCUSSION

I’ll be honest with you, Kelly - it was painful. I’ve read Diana Gabaldon’s explanation for why it had to be this way, the rule of three, how it made Jamie and Claire’s love so epic and true and it was necessary for the story.

It’s all bollocks. It was a graphic rape scene, it was excruciating and it was above all unnecessary. I’ll keep watching because I like the show and I like the actors, but I didn’t think it was necessary in the books and I didn’t think it was necessary here. If it helps survivors come to terms with things, well then, it was not done in vain. But other than that, watch the last five minutes on the boat and be done with it until season 2.
