Kevin Spacey Gets the House of Cards Send-Off He Deserves

We know Kevin Spacey won’t appear in Season 6 of House of Cards—he was fired from the show after actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of making unwanted sexual advances when Rapp was 14. But there will be a tombstone for Spacey’s character Frank Underwood. In the teaser for the show’s final season (which premieres November 2), Robin Wright, as Claire Underwood, stands before her deceased husband’s grave and basks in the fact that he’s dead and she can fully flex her power without Frank leering over her shoulder.

“I’ll tell you this though, Francis. When they bury me, it won’t be in my backyard,” Claire says with dramatic resonance and the music to match. “And when they pay their respects, they’ll have to wait in line.”

As IndieWire notes, there are obvious parallels here: “Claire’s words are self-referential to the Spacey scandal in the way they make it clear nobody is sad to see Frank dead and gone in the world of ‘House of Cards.’”

I dunno. I think Robin Wright is great and all, but what propelled the show was literally Frank Underwood and wondering if/how his past murders and misdeeds would come back to haunt him. That was the whole reason you watched, kind of like wanting to see who comes out on top with Walt vs. Hank in Breaking Bad. I guess that has some paralells with Spacey in real life too, misdeeds coming back to haunt and such.

But now that Frank’s dead, what’s the point? What’s going to be the thing that actually drives the season? Claire having to deal with the reveals of Frank’s murders? Her breaking the political glass ceiling in a fashion similar to Claire Foy in “The Crown?” Or is she given another lackluster political rival that she conveniently outmanuevers in the final episode? Granted I’m not a professional TV writer and the HoC writing staff do this for a living, but it’s hard to imagine what they could do that would do a character like Claire justice and justify a fifth season.
