Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd's Version of La La Land Is Glamorously Bleak

Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd—two artists who revel in singing about death—are starry-eyed macabre lovers in her blurry VHS-filtered “Lust for Life” video, the majority of which is spent on top of a Hollywood sign under a bright fake moon. Fate has brought them here, with all their crazy, fatalistic dreams on a song that glamorizes young love and old Hollywood. All these dead-eyed lovers want is a temporary rush—“Till we run out of breath/ Gotta dance till we die.” The video does well at hinting at how that type of romance coexists with unknowable destruction.

I’d rather listen to that Katy Perry song 400x in a row than this song ever again.
