In one of the biggest sex abuse cases in sports history, more than 300 women and girls alleged that U.S. Olympic gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nassar, had sexually abused them. Their stories are featured in the HBO documentary, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, out May 3.

The film, directed by Erin Lee Carr, shows how the competitive world of gymnastics allowed Nassar to get away with abuse for years. Nassar was able to prey on girls who trusted him, in part because he operated within a system that prioritized competition over their wellbeing.

“For me, he was like a friend I could go to,” former gymnast Isabell Hutchins says in the trailer.

In January 2018, Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for first-degree criminal sexual conduct and is currently serving time.

After listening to the podcast, which was both excellent and gutting, I don’t know if my heart can take watching the documentary. When I think of this man I still rage.
