Lawrence Will Not Return to Insecure, Has Broken My Heart

I had hoped against hope that Jay Ellis would still find a way to pop up somewhere in the midst of Insecure’s upcoming third season, but alas. Issa Rae confirmed this weekend that Lawrence is out this time around because “You never see the exes again,” which, I mean, I keep my exes around most of the time, and they don’t wear a sweater nearly as well, so.

Ellis was conspicuously absent from both the teaser and trailer for Season 3, and Ellis himself said he hadn’t been on set this time around. In fact, it appears Lawrence and Issa’s beautiful Frank Ocean-soundtracked montage was their last, or so said Rae and show-runner Prentice Penny at this past weekend’s Insecure Fest. “We want to stay as true to life as possible. They had a great conversation at the end of season two and it was just about like, hey, she’s moving on with Daniel [Y’Lan Noel], sometimes we have those conversations,” Rae said, according to That Grape Juice. “You never see the exes again. And it’s okay! You gotta explore life without Lawrence.”

Maybe Issa needs to move on, but I am not ready!!!!!

Then again, as a former English minor I am compelled to focus on specific language to wildly speculate, and here is a line worthy of a freshman seminar thesis. “We were in the writers room and we were initially talking about, Okay, well what is he doing?… Well, he’s not in her life right now,” Penny said. Do you see? He’s not in her life right now. RIGHT NOW. Now. Now? Maybe later? “We just said, well, if he’s not around, he’s not around,” Penny said. “Let’s just deal with the reality of what her life is now. Let’s be true to that, when you breakup and you have closure.”

There is no such thing as closure. We’ll see Lawrence again the second Issa dares to go to the grocery store with an eye infection.
