Kendrick Lamar just released the blackest rap song of the year so far, "The Blacker the Berry." It's produced by Boi-1Da, has a hook sung by dancehall star Assassin and a tough beat that's the perfect accomplice for the nonstop gut punch of his lyrics. On the heels of his now Grammy-winning self-love anthem "i," this is a meaningful chess move for the times.
It's really the essence of legit rage and there's a lot here. I'll be digesting this for a minute.
"I'm African-American/ I'm African, black as the moon, heritage of a small village/ Pardon my residence/ Came from the bottom of mankind/ My hair is nappy, my dick is big/ My nose is rounded wide/ You hate me don't you?/ You hate my people, your plan is to terminate my culture/ You're fuckin' evil/ I want you to recognize that I'm a proud monkey."
"I'm black as the name of Tyrone and Darius/ Excuse my French, but fuck you/ No, fuck y'all"
Initial reaction: it's amazing.
By the way, Kendrick Lamar's album is finished, because Cookie said so.
