Let’s get ready to think piece.

Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Robocop, and of course, Showgirls) set Cannes on fire this year with Elle, which the Telegraph described as “the first comedy of manners about rape.” The just-released U.S. trailer casts it more as a thriller (Verhoeven has insisted, “It is not a rape comedy”). Whatever it is, people who have seen it seem to agree that it’s a fantastic (it currently holds a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and unique spin on the rape-revenge film subgenre, due in no small part to Isabelle Huppert’s performance. Expect to hear much, much more about this one as its November 11 U.S. release date approaches.

Some Pig. Terrific. Radiant. Humble.

DISCUSSION

I have a question. Can someone think of a movie or TV show where the woman goes all badass revenge-y Taken style because someone killed her husband/lover? For men it is such a common trope, but I have trouble thinking of one for women. In fact, the only thing I can think of is Catelyn Stark, but she sought revenge through more “diplomatic” means and not through kicking ass. I would love to see Emily Blunt star in this movie in my head.
