When I was five, my grandmother, mother, and I went to see Gillian Armstrong’s film adaptation of Little Women. Everyone cried. It was great. And soon, generations of families will be able to sob together in theaters once more, thanks to an impending new adaptation of Little Women, helmed by none other than Greta Gerwig. Nothing will replace the 1994 film’s Thomas Newman soundtrack in my heart, but I’m sure whatever Greta picks will do. David Bowie? Yes, I accept. Dave Matthews Band? I....maybe.

News of this upcoming Little Women adaptation has swirled for some time, but last week Variety reported Gerwig was “eyeing” Little Women for her next directing role. The rumored cast includes the likes of Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, and Emma Stone, in addition to Timothée Chalamet, who has a lot to live up to if he’s intended to fill Christian Bale’s shoes as Laurie.

It’s not actually clear who will be cast as whom—Streep will play matriarch Marmie, I assume, and Pugh will probably play Amy. Variety says Columbia Pictures, which is producing the film, will test actors for Beth this week. It would make sense for Ronan to play Jo, who is essentially Lady Bird’s Civil War-era predecessor, minus the alcohol poisoning. Is Stone playing Meg? I dig it. And what is Trini Alvorado up to?

Also, will this exact moment be in Gerwig’s film, will it happen between Ronan and Chalamet, and will I die watching it?

Note that this is actually the second recent Little Women remake, since PBS and BBC One just aired a three-hour Masterpiece mini-series. I did not watch it. My sister said it was “really bad” but that “the guy who plays Laurie is really hot,” so, there’s that.

Your sister is wrong. That adaptation was SO GREAT. Best Little Women adaptation out there BY FAR. Isn’t getting a fraction of the attention and appreciation it deserves.

However, I will agree with your sister that Laurie is hot in it. She is right about that.
