Everyone on the MTV Movie & TV Awards Red Carpet Dressed for Very Different Events

Entertainment

The MTV Movie & TV Awards, for a famous person nominated or someone just looking for something to do on a Saturday in June, appears to be a very difficult event to get dressed for!

It’s an Event because there will be a red carpet and photogs yammering at you for your picture and a smile, but it’s also the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which used to be just the movie awards, until TV got too big for its britches. It is the awards show that used to give out a bucket of golden popcorn and awards for things like Best Kiss.

For an example of what MTV did best, please see this moment that, 13 years later, has reignited a small but powerful flame of desire for Ryan Gosling, a celebrity I have not thought about in any real way for at least five years.

The awards show will air tonight at 9:00 p.m. EDT, so I have no idea if anyone did anything that would come even close to this iconic 2005 moment. However, I did look at the gowns, the jeans, the blazers. Everyone was dressed for a different event, but no one seemed dressed for the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

The teens of Stranger Things are actually the only people who might have gotten it right for this event. I see no tux, though I DO see a very sheer button down on my friend Noah Schnapp, and I love that choice! Sadie Sink’s lil’ sequinned blazer and jean combo is the correct amount of casual and fancy. I am having a difficult time reckoning with whatever Finn Wolfhard is wearing—late ‘90s thrift store chic as imagined by Prada? And Gaten Matarazzo, the kid from the Verizon commercials, is wearing the bomber jacket I have spent one entire autumn looking for, so congrats to him!

Here’s Camila Mendes dressed for an Emmy Awards afterparty. It’s a Daytime Emmy Awards dress. It’s got what appears to be a built-in tap pant, for modesty and also comfort. It’s…not my favorite, but her hair looks nice!

Closer! Olivia Munn looks amazing in this peacock teal velvet jumpsuit, which strikes the right balance between red carp glamour and an innate understanding of the casual, non-sensical nature of this awards show. It’s also the kind of thing one might wear to host a brunch at their well-appointed home, but you know what, I guess that’s what these particular awards are like anyway.

Mandy Moore is the most serious bachelorette at the bachelorette party, posing for one last shot before running to the fountain in front of the Bellagio and making sure Adrienne doesn’t drop her phone in it again.

Kimberly Noel Kardashian West. I thought we talked about this…..
