This trailer has all things I like: acerbic British legends of the stage and screen spilling tea, actual tea, and Judi Dench telling the director to “fuck off.”
On Tuesday, the trailer for director Roger Michell’s (Notting Hill) documentary Tea With the Dames was released. The title does not lie, yet it also does not even begin to describe. The film features a square-table candid discussion among four octogenarian English actors: Dench, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins, and Joan Plowright.
The dames gamely discuss their marriages, friendships, and careers. At one point Atkins wisely points out to Dench “I don’t think you and I needed the ’60s.” The film has already been released in the U.K. under the title Nothing Like a Dame.
Tea With the Dames graces theatres September 21. In honor of this new trailer, and to lend an air of ceremony to the closing of this blog, I am sipping on some unsweetened iced tea.
